trasimeno

fotoA two thousand years’ history. It was the battlefield where the Romans were heavily defeated by the Carthaginians led by Hannibal. The Roman army of Consul Caius Flaminius was destroyed in 217 B.C. in the Trasimeno Battle in which 15,000 Roman soldiers were killed while 10,000 scattered all over the countryside. Lake Trasimeno is a nature-lover’s paradise, many birds fly over its blue waters and lush vegetation and there also grows the rare white water lily. In 1995 the Regional Council of Umbria established the Trasimeno National Park. Its 3 islands Maggiore, Minore and Polvese are really picturesque and the lakeside is dotted with lovely villages and towns like Panicale, Castiglione del Lago, Magione and Tuoro.
