orvieto

fotoSet on an enormous tufa rock, Orvieto has ruled the area since the 4th century. The imposing Cathedral towers above the houses, churches and palaces. It was Pope Urbano IV who wanted it and laid the foundation stone in 1290. It was to be the church celebrating the Miracle of the Bleeding Host and Corpus Christi. Famous artists such as Lorenzo Maitani and Andrea Pisano worked here. In San Brizio Chapel, after Beato Angelico, Luca Signorelli painted his greatest masterpiece, one of the highest points of Renaissance painting. The unique St. Patrick’s Well was built by Pope Clement VII in 1527 to supply the Fortress with water. The Crocefisso del Tufo Necropolis has important remains of Etruscan Tombs.
