Città di castello

fotoSurrounded by green hills, Città di Castello, is the place where the different cultural traditions from Umbria and Tuscany have always met. An ancient Roman settlement, it grew in power and wealth under the rule of the Vitelli family who in the 15th and 16th centuries rebuilt parts of the town giving it its present character as well as many works of art by such great artists as Perugino, Raffaello, Pinturicchio and Signorelli. Don’t miss: the Cathedral (11th century) and the Cathedral Museum with the treasure of Canoscio, a collection of holy vessels in embossed silver, the Renaissance Palazzo Albizzini and Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera which houses a picture gallery.
