Cannara

fotoThis small town boasts ancient origins and is named after the «canna» (reeds) which used to grow in the nearby marshy grounds. Places worth visiting are: Palazzo Comunale, which houses an interesting archaeological collection, the Church of St. Francis with a painting by Alunno and the Church of S. Biagio (XIII century) where, in 1221, St. Francis founded the «Terzo Ordine» (Third Order). About 1 km from the town, on the way to Bevagna, Pian D’Arca is the place where St. Francis preached to birds, an episode portrayed by Giotto in a fresco in Assisi Upper Basilica. Every September there is the onion festival, a village fair where the most important local produce, the onion, reigns sovereign.
